James Harris

James is a commercial lawyer with more than 12 years’ experience spanning across the public and private sectors.

For the past 6 years he served the City of Canning as its Principal Legal Counsel. The City is one of Perth’s larger local governments and one of few that still operates the bulk of its services ‘in-house’. With its operations being so broad, his tenure was effectively being the legal counsel to an aquatic facilities operator, a health & fitness centre operator, a golf course operator, a retirement villages operator, an aged care services provider, a property developer, a landlord, an events manager, a waste services operator, a landfill operator, and a local government authority.

During his time at the City, he also managed several sophisticated matters whilst gaining exposure to the full breadth of law affecting local governments.

James’ pro-active and ‘hands-on’ on approach to in-house legal practice has afforded him a comprehensive and truly unique understanding of the local government sector’s day-to-day operations, strategic interests, and legal needs.
